$70 Billion Boost to HCV Initiative

Additional support for the Housing Choice Voucher program may be on the horizon, though it’s not yet certain! The United States Senate has just unveiled a new piece of legislation, championed by Senator Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts), aiming to immediately augment funding for public housing initiatives by $70,000,000,000.

“Expanding our supply of quality housing is the only way to dig ourselves out of this housing crisis,” Sen. Warren articulated, “I’m pushing for this bold investment in our public housing so that every family has a safe place to live — and to breathe new life into the countless public housing units we’ve lost to decades of neglect and disrepair.”

The proposed Public Housing Emergency Response Act would “authorize additional monies to the Public Housing Capital Fund of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD),” as stated in the legislation. Due to historical underfunding, there is an estimated $70 billion backlog of necessary repairs to the current public housing inventory. Consequently, around 10,000 units are abandoned annually, leaving tens of thousands of residents in unsafe, unhealthy, and undignified living situations. This funding would facilitate safe living conditions and help prevent existing affordable housing units from deteriorating, as policymakers strive to resolve the housing crisis by increasing the public housing supply.

“Sen. Warren is renewing the push for funding public housing with the reintroduction of the Public Housing Emergency Response Act, to make vital repairs to 1.2 million units of existing public housing,” a spokesperson for the senator reported.

“For low-income Americans, estimates suggest that there are only 37 affordable and available homes for every 100 extremely low-income households,” the spokesperson noted.

Elizabeth Warren is the primary sponsor of the bill, having introduced it alongside eight co-sponsors, indicating robust backing from the Democratic Party. The additional co-sponsors include: Sens. Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Cory Booker (N.J.), Dick Durbin (Ill.), Ed Markey (Mass.), Chris Murphy (Conn.), Alex Padilla (Calif.), and Tina Smith (Minn.). Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) is also on board.
